The iSeries is capable of processing many different jobs
with differing resource requirements at the same time. The work environment can
be tuned to cope with these demands, and can provide increases in system
throughput when tuned correctly.
On completion of this course, you will be able to:
- State the different resource requirements for the different types of
job on the iSeries.
- Analyse and categorise the jobs running on the iSeries.
- Change major system parameters to control work management.
- Create work environments for specific jobs.
- Use priorities for jobs effectively.
- Measure and analyse system throughput.
- Decide whether to use system tuning or manual tuning.
- Carry out manual system tuning.
This course is intended for operators, senior operators,
system programmers, shift leaders and technical support staff who have the
responsibility for tuning the iSeries.
Delegates attending this course should be experienced in
the field of iSeries operations, or should attend either the iSeries OPERATIONS
or the iSeries SYSTEM FACILITIES course, followed by further practical
experience. Delegates are advised to attend EITHER the iSeries SYSTEM
ADMINISTRATION course OR this course, as there is a significant overlap between
the courses.
- Defining work.
- Types of job on the iSeries (AS/400).
- Analysing and prioritising work.
- Scheduling jobs.
- Role of job accounting.
- Collecting and analysing job accounting data.
- Work management system values.
- Setting and monitoring system values.
- Work management objects.
- Subsystem descriptions.
- Pool allocations and activity levels.
- Shared and private pools.
- Work entries in subsystems.
- IBM supplied subsystems.
- Starting and ending subsystems.
- Customising the sign on display.
- Routing data and routing entries.
- Job descriptions and classes.
- Moving from one subsystem to another.
- Automatic performance tuning.
- Manual performance tuning.
- Changing pool sizes.
- Choosing pool configurations.
- Dynamic priority scheduling.
- Observing system performance.
- Activity levels and job states.
- Process Access Groups.
- SETOBJACC command.
- Expert cache.
- Collecting performance data.
- Using the performance advisor.
- Interpreting the results.
- Printing and work management.
- How printing works.
- Printer load balancing.
A course manual with supporting documentation is
provided. The practical sessions allow delegates to create a work environment
to segregate high, medium and low priority tasks, and to measure these running
on the system. Delegates also have an opportunity to use some of the more
recent facilities to improve system throughput.
