Introduction

If you manage multiple iSeries (AS/400) servers this course will greatly simplify administration tasks and efficiently and effectively streamline your day to day operations from a single PC.

What you will learn

On completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Tailor Management Central to suit your environment including grouping your servers by geographical location, organisational boundaries, application etc.
  • Create and send packages of libraries and objects, directories and files from one server to one or multiple servers simultaneously either, immediately, or at a scheduled date and time (equivalent of FTP with the added benefit of transferring data from one to many servers simultaneously).
  • Manage PTF's across multiple servers including sending and installing fixes from one server to one or multiple servers, comparing the PTF's installed on one server to the PTF's installed on one or more other servers in your network, and where there are mismatches updating the PTF levels to ensure all servers are at the same PTF level.
  • Monitor, manage and automate system resource utilisation real time across one or multiple servers and run commands based on thresholds you set (e.g. monitor CPU% utilisation/disk storage capacity/response times etc. and when specified levels are reached hold job queues/send a message to QSYSOPR, end subsystems, call a program etc.).
  • Monitor user and server jobs (e.g. job log messages, job status, job resource utilisation etc.) and run commands when specified conditions are met (e.g. monitor an overnight backup job and run a program that starts all subsystems when the job completes etc.).
  • Monitor messages in message queues and run commands or give default message replies based on specified conditions.
  • Manage user and group profiles across multiple servers including creating user profile definitions (e.g. a template) then create user profiles on remote servers based on the definition, change use profile settings across servers, check on user profile settings across servers (e.g. special authorities granted, user classes etc.).
  • Manage system values across multiple servers including comparing the system value settings on one server to the other servers in your network, and updating the system value settings that do not match on the other servers to ensure consistency.
  • Create and manage your own applications across multiple servers (e.g. manage the libraries, objects and fixes that are used within an "in house" written application and distribute this data to one or more servers in your network).
  • Automate the running of commands across one or more servers (e.g. run queries that generate period end reports on multiple servers simultaneously).
  • Send and install IBM licensed programs to multiple servers.
  • Collect performance data using Collection Services for input into the Performance Tools licensed program and other applications.
  • Use graph history for near real time performance statistics (e.g. display interactive response times for the last week or CPU% utilisation for the last 3 days etc.).
  • Use Application Administration to secure functions within Management Central.
